name
& inspiration
The initials represent the strong link between the three musicians who
co-founded the label Prohibited Records, and who have been playing
together for more than ten years now.
At first, the initials were just written on the boxes containing the
trio's recordings in order to locate them amongst all the others. By
late 1999, the name of the instrumental project had fallen into place
by itself--nlf3[trio].
Citing 70's jazz, afrobeat and experimental rock as inspirations, but
using sampling-pedals, a Macintosh G3 and a small sampler, nlf3's approach
falls in parallel with contemporary electronic music, as much as with
the above listed genres.
nlf3
trio have released its new album "viva!"
in march 2003. it is quite difficult to classify their music, "viva!"
is definitely exciting and fresh, result of a full year of instrumental
research, mixing shades of electronica, afro-jazz and psychedelic rock.
musical and tangible landscapes
The trio's first project was to create soundtracks for experimental
films at "La Cinematheque francaise" at the Palais de Chaillot
in Paris. This composition of cinematic atmospheres has been integrated
into their work ever since.
production
The albums were recorded by F.lor (alias Fabrice Laureau). His
approach to the sessions was a very natural one, hence the warm, roomy
sound that characterizes his work. F.lor's other work includes Yann
Tiersen, Dirty Three, Married Monk, Francoiz Breut albums
listening
"Our first double album makes up part of a concept: one of a series
of many volumes. However, we would like it to appear as recyclable material.
We will be happy if some DJ's and other soundscratchers dig into our
work to create and compose. By the way, we1d advise you to split the
listening of the double album, possibly make your own tracklisting,
to ensure a more creative appreciation of the records."

"this three piece at the forefront of paris free-ranging electronic
music scene gives the exploratory nature of the playing and the realtime
live sampling. This mesmeric meandering music recalls a Radiohead seduced
by the idea of live improvisation"
